Lyman P. Hunter was born in Salt Lake City on 1 December 1898 to Edward W. and Elizabeth Adeline Porter Hunter. He attended LDS High School and then the University of Utah, studying chemistry and engineering. He worked as a chemist for the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company from 1922 to 1924, then worked for Bennett's Glass and Paint until his retirement in 1968.
